Home Fire Safety - Mountain Top Fire Company

At Mountain Top Fire Company, your safety is our top priority. Fires can start suddenly and spread rapidly, leaving little time to react. Being prepared and taking preventive measures can save lives and protect property. On this page, we offer essential fire safety tips for all ages—whether you’re young or old, everyone can play a part in keeping their home safe from fire hazards.

General Fire Safety Tips for Every Household

  1. Install Smoke Alarms: Ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Test alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

  2. Create a Fire Escape Plan: Every family should have a fire escape plan that includes two ways out of every room. Practice this plan regularly with all members of the household.

  3. Check Electrical Equipment: Avoid overloading electrical outlets and replace frayed wires or cords. Unplug appliances when not in use and keep them away from water.

  4. Be Mindful of Open Flames: Always extinguish candles, matches, or lighters when you leave the room. Keep these items out of reach of children and pets.

  5. Use Space Heaters Safely: Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including curtains, bedding, and furniture. Turn them off when leaving the room or going to bed.

  6. Store Flammable Materials Properly: Store gasoline, paint, and other flammable liquids in approved containers and away from heat sources

Fire Safety Tips for Kids

Hi there! At Mountain Top Fire Company, we want to make sure you know how to stay safe from fire. Here are some simple and important tips just for you:

Stop, Drop, and Roll

If your clothes catch on fire, don't run! Instead, remember these three steps:

  • Stop where you are.

  • Drop to the ground.

  • Roll over and over until the fire is out.

Never Play with Matches or Lighters

Matches, lighters, and candles can be very dangerous! They are not toys, and only adults should use them. If you find any of these things, tell an adult right away.

Crawl Low Under Smoke

If there’s smoke in the house, get down on your hands and knees and crawl under the smoke. This way, you can breathe cleaner air and stay safe. Remember to cover your mouth and nose with your shirt if you can!

Know Two Ways Out

Every room in your house should have two ways out, like a door and a window. Practice these escape routes with your family so you know exactly what to do if there’s ever a fire. Practice makes you quick and safe!

Meet at a Safe Spot

After getting out of your house, make sure everyone in your family meets at a safe spot outside. This could be a big tree or the end of your driveway. Once you’re there, stay there until the firefighters tell you it’s safe to go back.

Firefighters Are Your Friends

Firefighters might look a little scary with their big suits and masks, but they are there to help! If there’s a fire, don’t hide—let them help you. They wear special clothes to protect themselves so they can keep you safe.

By remembering these tips, you can help keep yourself, your family, and your home safe from fire. We at Mountain Top Fire Company are always here to help, so if you have any questions, just ask an adult to call us! Stay safe!

Fire Safety Tips for Older Adults

Seniors may face different challenges in fire emergencies due to reduced mobility, vision, or hearing. These tips can help older adults stay fire-safe:

  1. Use Smoke Alarms with Strobe Lights or Vibration: If you have trouble hearing, consider using smoke alarms with strobe lights or vibration features to alert you of a fire.

  2. Keep a Phone Nearby: Always have a phone within reach, especially near your bed, to call 911 if necessary.

  3. Avoid Overexertion During Evacuations: If mobility is an issue, plan your escape route with ramps and wide doorways. Contact neighbors or family members to assist in emergencies.

  4. Be Cautious in the Kitchen: Never leave cooking food unattended, and always use a timer when baking or simmering. Consider using appliances with automatic shut-off features.

  5. Wear Proper Clothing: Avoid loose-fitting clothing when cooking, as it can easily catch fire from stovetop flames.

  6. Use Fire-Resistant Bedding and Sleepwear: Choose fire-resistant materials for bedding, curtains, and sleepwear to minimize risk in the event of a fire.

In Case of Fire: What to Do

  1. Get Out, Stay Out: Never go back inside a burning building. Once you are out, stay out and call 911 immediately.

  2. Crawl Low Under Smoke: If there is smoke, stay low to the ground to avoid inhaling harmful fumes.

  3. Stop, Drop, and Roll: If your clothes catch fire, remember to stop where you are, drop to the ground, and roll to smother the flames.

  4. Meet at Your Designated Safe Spot: After evacuating, meet at your family's designated spot and wait for emergency personnel to arrive.
